It's been about 17 years ever since Kurt Cobain shot himself and left us with 3 studio albums and other bootlegs to remember him by. This October the 4th, we pay tribute to one of the best-selling albums to hit the 90s with a dash of teenage rebellion, depressed slackers and pretty much, that anti-rockstar stigma.

Neh'mind. 4th October. Timbre Substation. 7PM onwards.

Featuring Goodfellas, Lunarin, Michaela Therese, The Lard Brothers and yours truly, Fatskunks. We're gonna mix n' mash it up. Kurt might like it or he might not, but I guess he'd be ok with it.

The long awaited show

Mosaic Music Festival. An event synonymous with world music lovers. An event we have always dreamed about playing for. A dream that came true. The invitation couldn't have been any more sweeter. It came at a time when countless doubts plagued the band.

We are stronger now. Every time we get held back, we fight back harder. Every time you doubt us, we prove you wrong ten-fold. Every single freakin time you say all those things about us, we never stooped that low and retaliated. We lie in wait for our own doors to open.

Now it has. Mosaic Music Festival 2010. Another gig to be listed down. We have reached a point where we averaged at 10 gigs per year. Yes, we aim for more. Not for the moolah. But for the priceless personal satisfaction of leaving the stage knowing that you've given your all for the audience and you had so much fun on stage it pains you to leave it.

This year, we will be performing under the theme of Really Reggae. A whole night of skunky rasta goodness along with Windy City, a Korean reggae band. Very renowned and very very good!

We've got a different lineup this year. Good friends. Very good friends in the band. The ones you know you can rely on to save your life.

To the friends who will be coming down, tonight's for all of you. My personal tribute to how you guys have left the biggest impact on my life. How you guys have given me the sincerest encouragement and the truest form of friendship I have ever experienced.

The recent Esplanade show was, to say the least, intimate. The audience was warm and welcoming and most definitely, receptive. I would like to give my thanks to Shahril FatCat for filling in on the bass, Elffie for helping with the drums soundcheck, Zephyr for being the roadie and Mark Spencer for being our photographer for the day.

Many thanks to Gibson for my glamorous Emperor Regent! I love the shimmer and the muddy tones of a hollowbody!

To those who came, especially our loved ones and close friends and family, we love you so much for being there and always being there to lend your support!

The second day of the gig co-incided with the first day of Ramadhan, hence, the band broke their fast in front of the stage along with our friends. Many who came also broke fast together with us and to me, that is something that I will never forget for a long, long time.

May we all have a prosperous Ramadhan this year round. :)

Ignite Music Festival. 25.07.09

Ignite was massive! Initially, we were kinda sceptic about the whole event due to it being held in an institution of education and since we haven't had any memorable experiences before playing in schools like such, we thought that this would be just another gig.

Well, we were wrong. From the moment they emailed us an invitation to perform at the concert all the way till our last song on the day itself, everyone whom we have met and worked with were total professionals! The organisers and the helpers who were volunteers from the school worked hand in hand to organise 2 days worth of local music and we have to say we're most honoured to be part of this showcase! Thank you Miss Kelly Kuan for the invitation and to everyone who worked their asses off for 2 straight days, thank you!

To everyone who were there and danced and sang along to our set, we'd like to thank you all again for making this event an even more memorable one. Keep the fire burning!

Ignite Music Festival 25th July

Republic Polytechnic will be holding the annual Ignite Music Festival on their campus grounds and this year, it promises to be an even bigger extravaganza than last year's! Fatskunks has been given the honour of performing on the closing day of the event itself alongside other local greats such as King Kong Jane, Great Spy Experiment, Vertical Rush and many more! Admission is FREE and there are booths selling band merchandise, games and other knick-knacks! Come on down for a Saturday full of local music and merry-making! Every change happens for a reason. Be it good or bad, it's up to everyone to decide and take action. We have gone through various member changes as we lose each one to the strains of impossible working hours and personal commitments. Our growth has gone through various stages throughout the years. From a defunct bus interchange where we first performed in public as a band on 31st July 2004, to big stages like D'Marquee, Hard Rock Cafe, Barnone, Zouk, Esplanade and most recently, national freakin TV; we persevered. We worked our ass off and we can only thank our partners, friends and families for their continued support even when the odds worked against us one too many times. We've played alongside many local acts and the friends we have made throughout the years, we've come to treasure. This one's for all of you, you know who you are. Thank you for being there for us. Thank you for lending a helping hand.

Fatskunks turns 5 this 31st July. The recent EP release served as a personal testimonial for each one of us, both present members and ex-members of Fatskunks. For now, as we face another challenge, we thank you for your contributions to the band. Be it big or small, we express our gratitude nonetheless.

Nevermind the title. I was rambling. Here's a chance for me to put in an entry for another band called SayWhale.

Saywhale is the brainchild of Yazid and Zakie. It was a project in which they had close friends from other bands to partake in. The original line-up for Saywhale 2006 consisted of Yazid and Zakie from Fatskunks, Brian Kyle from Glitched, Hirzat from Project Liquid and well, our current drummer Ajut who was from Kaleidoscopicuriousity and Qinobi. The aim? Singapore Battle of the Bands 2006.

The band did great through the rounds. They were up against many, many good bands. The energy on stage that Saywhale had was, to say the least, quite different. Here's a lil peak into what they were doing well in.

Brian provided some of the most eclectic dance moves ever seen in metal. Ijat delivered his fiery firebranding rap as usual and you can see they had fun on stage. This was metal without all its stereotypical seriousness and brutality of sorts. That was evident in all of their shows. In accordance to their moniker, this was a band that wasn't afraid to laugh and be laughed at. This is Saywhale.

Seen the video above? That was the grand finals for the mentioned competition. They won the grand prize. The song performed was to be one of Saywhale's most recognised ditty in every gig and has been for the past 3 years.

Alas, in mid 2007, Brian had to leave Singapore for further studies in the United States leaving Saywhale without a vocalist. So they asked me to help out for their next conquest, Yamaha Asian Beats 2007. In the words of Brian Regan, and I am being lazy here, one thing led to another...

We won the finals in Singapore. In which, Saywhale would go on to represent Singapore in the Grand Finals at Taiwan the following year. No we didn't win the grand finals but hey, a free trip to Taiwan for 3 days and 2 nights. Everything paid for. What more can we ask eh? :)

A matrimonial affair.

Fatskunks had a cute lil wedding gig on Sunday the 21st of June. A close friend of Izaar and Yazid tied the knot and we were more than happy to be invited to perform at his ceremony. Hairudy was the one who initiated that we start a band together when all of us were students at Jin Tai Secondary School. Izaar was the drummer, Yazid played bass and Rudy was the lead guitarist. First song we jammed? Standard 3 chord staple, Creep by Radiohead. Haha. Those were the days.

Once again, on behalf of Fatskunks, we'd like to wish the happy couple an everlasting marriage and may their life be filled with happiest moments and many blessed generations.

The day was hot. Which was good cos we were hopin' it wouldn't rain given the crazy, tropical weather Singapore has been having. Anyways, Perfect 10 did a mighty fine job in hyping up the crowd. There was an Air Castle which I would've jumped on had it not been how hot it became in there. There was a booth in which you could purchase $10 worth of Kotex Tampons, I kid you not, and you stand to win Blackberry and Samsung handphones. I wouldn't know what to do with that many tampons.

We came on as the 3rd band of the day after Wicked Aura Batucada and West Grand Boulevard. Massive acts to follow I must say, but I hope we pulled it off. We were told to cut down the set to 4 songs instead as the organisers were overrunning on time so we took our cover of Puya's Fundamental off from the list. Started off the set with Mero Mero Mambo, a 2 minute instrumental which unfortunately did not work out that well due to some technical problems on Yazid's guitar amp. Used the time taken to rectify the situation with a bit of bribery, hence the first distribution of Fatskunks buttons. Apart from that, the show went on quite well. We played 3 tracks from the EP and handed out 5 free copies. Ok not exactly handed them out, I just played some CD frisbee.

We ended the set with an industrial-laced cover of Umabaraumba by Jorge Ben Jor. Got the crowd to sing along. Even though, they didn't know the lyrics, or just sang Coca Cola Coca Dor. Good sports they were and we love em for that. :)

Next stop, we've got a show coming up on the 25th of July as part of Republic Polytechnic's annual initiative for a good cause. 2 days and 2 nights of activities for the public. It's free admission and open to the general public. We're planning a few surprises as always. So just stay tuned people!

The origins of the name Fatskunks.

For as long as I can remember; being the frontman, spokesperson, representative, media-whore and interview-slut of the band, this common question has always been brought up to everyone's attention. Why the name, Fatskunks?

Earlier versions of my answers, politically correct if you must say, were kinda..lame.

It's all about the parody. (2005 @ Esplanade) - considering that not everyone was fat and sprayed farts in the face of danger, that fell flat.
Someone in the band had a pet skunk. (2006 @ some random gig) - that of course wasn't true. If it was, it'd be cool ain't it?
We wanted something funny and catchy. (2007 @ another Esplanade gig) - nice going frontman. Why don't you name yourself Jerky Turkey? That's funny and catchy too.

This went on for countless gigs until one day I decided I had to put a stop to it. Well, ok it didn't really happen in one day. I thought for days and procrastinated a bit, googled the word "Skunks" and bingo! I have found a perfectly politically incorrect explanation for the band name.

Fat Skunk - a fat roll of Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica cross breeds. Sativa is the more traditionally smoked outdoor-grown variety which occurs naturally in places like Colombia, Mexico, Thailand and Africa; Indica is a shorter, bushier variety found in Afghanistan. Unlike pure Sativa, the high it gives is slightly heavy, lassitudinous and mongy. Smells like shit too!

Yes, my fellow friends, Fatskunks is actually urban slang for a buncha smelly weed! Since we have reggae numbers in our repertoire, it just blends in well right? But, in politically correct Singapore where freedom of speech is literally non-existent, I shall have to go with the lame answers. NO, I do not think it is worth it to be slapped with a fine and hauled to jail just for explaining my band's name in a public performance. Nor do I condone the use of illegal drugs. Medicinal herbs...now that's a different case altogether.

Finally, after 5 years, Fatskunks will be releasing their debut EP. It has been eventful. It has been pure blood, sweat and tears getting to where we are now. This recording has been made with much love for the music we play and we hope you, the audience, the listeners, the followers, the friends, our families and the many, many people we have met along the way, will listen and cherish every word, every chord and every melody we play, as much as we'll always do.

There will be more in the near future. With the emergence of this EP, we're looking at releasing another one towards the end of the year, this time in Malay for all our loyal Anugerah Band followers.

Tracklist for Revolutionistas.

Sometimes. (Written 4 years ago with former member El Diablo. A mellow introduction oozing out into a haunting choral melody. It ends happily though, as does all fiction we sometimes would like to presume)
Skin. (Not for the self-assuming. Groovy, thumping disguise narrating the sense of touch. Climaxes in a haphazard spray of lyrical poetry)
Havana Stoner. (Intoxicated. The musings of the inanimate musician. Recommended with a shot of rum, or maybe a tropical drink. The ones with tiny umbrellas)
Esta Noche El Amore. (Tonight, the love. Almost vulgar, almost true and most uniquely the stuff most wet dreams are made of)
Revolutionista. (Fiery and rebellious back-ups provided by FatCat and LanD of Glitched Roots Project. At times, ruling bodies need to be told and reminded)

There are some names which we want to "give mad props" to.
Mr Andry from Greendoor Studios for his patience, guidance and moral support. He saw us through the whole recording process and ensured the finest from all of us. Respect!

Rosdi (El Mago), his keyboards set the sound for most of the songs in this EP. Mega talent!

Elffie (El Diablo), one of the original members of Fatskunks, the drummer who set the beats for most of the songs here. His own personal baby of a song, Sometimes. This one's for you, dude.

To our wives and girlfriends, Juls, Jas, Raini, Imah, Shaidah, Lina and all of our close friends and family. We LOVE you all for being there for us and for lending a hand or two over the years. :)
